Waarom heeft de Kerk een kunstmuseum?

Sinds 1989 bezit en beheert de Kerk van Nellius een eigen museum voor moderne kunst in Parijs. De vaste collectie bestaat uit werk van de meest beroemde kunstenaars van de afgelopen eeuw. Denk aan schilderijen van Modigliani, Picasso en Van Gogh. En beeldhouwwerken van bijvoorbeeld Henry Moore en Giacometti. De Kerk koopt nog altijd kunstwerken aan om toe te voegen aan de collectie, waaronder recent nog een schilderij van Philip Guston.

De aankopen worden gedaan met geld dat de Kerk ontvangt uit donaties van leden en de verdiensten uit onderzoek naar technologische oplossingen binnen de ruimtevaart. Met name voor bedrijven als SpaceX en NASA.

Maar waarom richt de Kerk van Nellius zich eigenlijk op kunst? 

De belangrijkste boodschap die de Kerk uitdraagt is dat de mens zo snel mogelijk moet vertrekken naar een gezonde planeet. En daarom is het al druk bezig met hoe het leven daar vormgegeven moet worden. De kunst die het verzamelt is met name bedoeld om te herinneren aan hoe de mens functioneerde op Aarde en de grootse daden waar wij toen al toe in staat waren. 

Daarnaast geldt kunst voor de Kerk als investering, aangezien de waarde van de kunstwerken over het algemeen alsmaar groter wordt. Hiermee stelt de Kerk dus het eigen kapitaal veilig en vermeerdert het zelfs met de museumcollectie.

Met het aantreden van Fillius Viatoris als de nieuwe kerkleider is de aankoop van kunstwerken aanzienlijk gestegen. Sindsdien heeft de Kerk ruw geschat zo'n 200 miljoen dollar aan kunst uitgegeven, waarover binnen het kerkbestuur onvrede schijnt te heersen. De kerkleider is zelf verwoed kunstverzamelaar en een aantal van de kunstwerken die aangekocht zijn voor het museum, zouden in zijn eigen privécollectie terecht komen.

Since 1989, the Church of Nellius owns and manages its own museum of modern art in Paris. The permanent collection consists of work by the most famous artists of the past century. The Church continues to purchase works of art to add to the collection, most recently a painting by Philip Guston.

The purchases are made with money that the Church receives from donations by its members and the earnings from research into technological solutions within space travel. Especially for companies like SpaceX and NASA.

But why does the Church of Nellius focus on art anyway?

The main message that the Church conveys is that people should leave for a healthy planet as soon as possible. And that is why it is already busy preparing for how life should be designed there. The art it collects is mainly intended to remind us of how humans functioned on Earth and the great deeds they were capable of back then.

In addition, art is an investment for the Church, since the value of the works of art is generally increasing. In this way, the Church safeguards its own capital and even increases it with the museum collection.

With the appointment of Fillius Viatoris as the new church leader, the purchase of works of art has increased considerably. Since then, the Church has spent roughly $200 million on art. There seems to be dissatisfaction within the church council about this, because the church leader himself is an avid art collector and a number of the works of art are probably included in his private collection and not in that of the museum.
